Red Hill Queenslander Extension

Whiteroom Architects created a modern and liveable space for our lovely clients Jack and Jenny. Our brief was to turn a post-war fibro home into a beautiful Queenslander.

Raised Queenslander Brisbane

Following a conceptual stage that investigated the best design options, the clients agreed to raising the existing 1950s house and extend it towards the street, towards the rear, and along one side.

Site Design and Build

This solution addressed a number of issues with the site location. The house is located on a steep sloped site in Red Hill, Brisbane and it is subject to overland flow during heavy rain storms.

The site also had existing sewer and stormwater pipes that are laid around the footings. This meant that the house could not be expanding by excavating dirt under the floor to create more space.

On the plus side, the house had an existing build over asset approval. The Brisbane City Council allows low density residential and character homes to be raised up to 9.5 metres high for improved flood immunity and flexibility with housing design. So the only way was up and out.

Queenslander Roof Extension

Whiteroom skilfully created design solutions that worked around the constraints while feeling intrinsically natural for the house. We incorporated traditional materials in a modern way. We also added modern building materials such as a new extended roof over the old and new sections to create a cohesive appearance.

Other features in the new home design include:

  • Outdoor decks added to the front and rear to maximise morning sun in winter, and shade in summer
  • Large bifold doors allow easy connection between the living and outdoors areas
  • New master suite with ensuite and wardrobes
  • Privacy screening for the car parking area

Flood Friendly Design

The new design also addressed future flood events. The laundry and storage areas were raised off the ground above the predicted flood levels. Since handover to the client these areas have stayed dry through two major flood events.

The concrete slab was also built to be easily hosed off in the event of an overland flow event. This solution is easy to maintain during wild weather.
